MERCEDES-BENZ C-Class Engines

The C-Class was the only Mercedes-Benz with a complete lineup of multi-valve engines built for the C-Class range of cars. The new family of in-line four cylinder petrol engine units was coded M111 and debuted in the C 180. In 1996 the C 220 was replaced by the C 230 which was enlarged to a 2.3 litre displacement. The C 280 was the high end model of the class, with a 24-valve-cylinder-head and straight 6 cylinder engine. Four-cylinder diesel models were equipped with the same ON601 engine of the 190, in the 2.0 L and 2.2 L versions. The turbodiesel was introduced in 1995 and is one of the novelties in the engine range available.

The best engines to date have been the supercharged version of the M111 straight four, the C 230 Kompressor, using a Roots Supercharger. The in-line six cylinder engines were replaced by a family of V6 engines on the M112 units. The new engines featured SOHC heads instead of the previous DOHC, three valves per cylinder instead of four, that developed more torque and twin spark plugs. In the last four years of production, the W202 series received a few changes in the choices of engine. At the launch all W202 variants were equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox and were later equipped with automatic transmissions that were available in four speed and five speed combos. In 1995 the C-Class received its first genuine performance motor called the C36 AMG which had engine output figures of 206 Kw and 276 HP at 5750 RPM and 385 N.m of torque.

In 1997 AMG developed and released the C43 AMG powered by a 4.3 litre V8 which developed 225Kw and 302 HP with a torque curve of 410 N.m at 3250 RPM. This was the first C-Class to be fitted with a V8 engine.

Herewith are the Mercedes-Benz C-Class models, engine capacities, engine codes and engine output of each motor.
