VW ENGINE

Volkswagen has for long developed some of the most value for money engines on the market today. Since the new age of diesel power and it’s development in the refinement of diesel fuels for better ignition. The VW engine tops the list claiming one of the better fuel efficient versus power and torque in any modern diesel or petrol powered engine today.

The cost of an engine replacement is an extremely costly affair and if the engine is run on diesel then times the repair costs by at least 100 %. A diesel engine or compression-ignition engine is an internal combustion engine that relies on the heat of compression to initiate ignition to burn the fuel that is injected into the combustion chamber. The diesel engine was invented by Rudolf Diesel in 1893. Diesel engines were developed in two stroke and four stroke versions.

A diesel engines fuel is ignited solely with high compression and does not make use of any spark plug, typically running between 15:1 and 22:1 compression ratios, resulting in 40-bar (4.Mpa; 580psi) pressure compared to 14-18 bars (.080-1.4Mpa) about 200Psi in a typical petrol engine. This high compression super heats the air to approximately 550 °C (1,022 °F). At about the top of the compression stroke, fuel is injected directly into the compressed air in the combustion chamber.  This may be into a Toroidal Void, (a deep pocket), in the top of the piston or a pre-chamber depending upon the overall design of the engines piston and combustion chamber configuration. A high compression greatly improves an engines efficiency. Since only air is compressed in a diesel engine, and fuel is not introduced into the cylinder until shortly before top dead centre (TDC). It is at this point of compression that the diesel air mixture ignites under the sheer pressure of the gasses being compressed, that detenation occurs.

Increasing the compression ratio in a spark-ignition engine where fuel and air are mixed before entry to the cylinder is limited by the need to prevent damaging pre-ignition. Most efficient petrol engines run at a moderate 9.2:1 compression depending on the quality of petrol. Higher compression engines are required to operate on a higher octane fuel such as avgas (aviation fuel) or higher octane racing pre-fuel mixtures. Turbo charged petrol engines run at an even lower compression ratio of around 8.0:1 compression.

In 2009 Volkswagen engine powered vehicles won the won the Dakar Rally held in Argentina and Chile. The first diesel powered vehicles to do so in the VW Touareg 2 which finished in 1st and 2nd position.
